Love this! Very pretty viking girl! Usually you see the standard blonde hair and blue eyes. Nice to see a "blue viking" portrayed. I also love how you added so many little details in the key, jewelry and such!

I prefer the brown hair, too!Blonde, blue eyed vikings are just too common..But what does the expression ''blue viking'' mean and where does it come from?

I work in archaeology and it's a term that has been used along side "black viking."  It usually refers to a dark hair, eye or skin color.  Although I don't remember where the term was coined (I learned it in the field and asked the same question about it) I think it had to do with translations that could have merely been nick names.  An example is Giermundr Heljarskin, one of the twins born to King Horr in the 9th century. Heljar-skin referred to his skin and literally meant "black as hell".  But I know some literary historians argued that it had more to due with his hair.

Blue not meaning literally blue as we know it.  For example, the royal "purple" we think of associated with historical royalty was actually more of a deep red.  Blue being a loose or period term that could simple mean dark.

Sorry for barging in on this comment-conversation, that I, by chance, happened upon.

Being a speaker of a language derived, and still relatively close, to the old Norse, I would offer a more accurate translation of Heljarskinn as Hell-skin. Not sure of how it could be interpreted back then, but these days, at least in my language, not sure about the scandivegians and icelanders, the noun skinn can refer to animal fur (still attached to the animal) and animal skin or human skin (which in Faroese is called húð).

I am totally open to a discussion about it.  I'm not fluent but can read it ok.  It was a discussion with other (more seasoned) archaeologists than I while I was digging in the Shetlands.  Though I haven't come across "blue" myself in any primary texts, I generally just take their word for it being the pit peon that I am.  Though we were talking about 9th-12th century vikings from varying areas in Scandinavia and their occupation in the north Scottish Islands.  There could be differences, true, but I am not personally sure what they are.

Very nice tutorial! I love the final result of your Viking maiden. I am looking forward to seeing photos of you in the gown What period is your histoical focus? I would assume the 1000s. My re-enactment character lives in 1376, the exact year of the village in which I portray Lucy Chandler.

I love sharing everday life with guests at the village. Nothing beats serious re-enactment to eliminate stereo-types that ordinary people in the Middle Ages lived in squaler and were ruled by barbarians.

Cheers!

My histoical focus for this is 600 to 900, but i love the later periods as well.
